Role Description

As part of significant further investment in The York Management School (TYMS), we are recruiting three new Professorial positions. This follows from our successful appointment of seven new interdisciplinary Chairs over the last two years and comes ahead of the School's move to a new building at the heart of our campus in 2020.

We have an ambitious vision to become the natural home within the UK for world-leading scholars who work alongside experts in other academic disciplines as well as their own. We encourage our colleagues to collaborate widely across campus and beyond. We seek all out senior colleagues to bring with them strong academic leadership, citizenship, and a desire to nurture and mentor early career colleagues, as well as a passion for teaching.

We are interested in academics whose work crosses the full spectrum of Management
sub-disciplines, however we ask that you interpret your work in relation to one or more of our four broad interdisciplinary themes:

Equality, Justice & Ethics
Risk, Innovation & the Economy
Sustainability & Resilience
Management and the Humanities

In return we will provide you with an environment that nurtures and encourages creative thinking, supported not only by collegiate colleagues within the School, but through University wide initiatives such as our University Research Champions and the Research Centre for Social Sciences.

Key Requirements

  • PhD in any area of Management, or closely related subject.
  • An outstanding and internationally recognised knowledge of relevant subject area(s).
  • Ability to define, lead, manage and attract funds for internationally excellent research, operating across disciplinary boundaries.
  • Evidence of international collaboration and of peer review activities.
  • Attraction and effective supervision of postgraduate students.
  • Invited presentations at major international conferences.
  • Effective and sustained involvement in major administrative tasks or positions.
  • Proven leadership and managerial skills.
  • A track record of strong student satisfaction, and a commitment to teaching excellence.

There is an expectation that one of the candidate’s appointed will take a leadership role with responsibility for line managing academic staff.  Currently the School is seeking to appoint a Deputy Dean (which is a separate position) on a four year appointment.
