The Hull York Medical School and the Department of Health Sciences, University of York are seeking to appoint a Senior Lecturer in Global Health (Non-Communicable Diseases). The Hull York Medical School brings together the strengths of Universities of Hull and York in the life, clinical, health and social sciences.  It works closely with other departments in the Universities and many staff are embedded in jointly managed academic centres in host departments. The successful candidate will work within the Centre for Health and Population Sciences (CHaPS) in the Department of Health Sciences, University of York.

The Medical School and the University of York have embarked on an ambitious programme in global health research, with significant new investment in research and teaching posts, including two Senior Lecturers, a Lecturer and Doctoral and Postdoctoral Fellowships in Global Health. The programme has been accelerated by York’s recent success in securing three NIHR Global Health Research Groups. The present post is part of this investment.


You will make a significant contribution to research and teaching activities within the Medical School and the Department. You will identify and secure external research funding, carry out outstanding research of international significance, and publish and present your work in scientific journals of international standing and at academic conferences, respectively. You will also support the current programme of research on tobacco control in South Asia.

You will attract and supervise research students and support early career researchers. You will also provide senior-level leadership in the teaching of global public health. You will design and deliver modules and teaching programmes, contribute towards curriculum development and quality enhancement activities, supervise student dissertations, design and mark assessments, and offer feedback. In addition, you will contribute to the leadership and management of the Medical School and the Department, including assuming research citizenship roles, supporting early career academic staff, developing research teams and establishing new academic collaborations.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

You will have a PhD (or an equivalent degree) in a relevant field. You will be conversant with a range of methods used in applied health research. You will have expertise and an established track record in one or more of the following areas of research: trials, large datasets, implementation science, policy research, health economics, observational studies, systematic reviews or evidence synthesis. You will have experience of conducting high quality research in global health and non-communicable diseases, along with demonstrated ability to attract competitive funding, lead and manage projects, generate high-quality outputs and build international collaborations.. An interest in tobacco control research in low- and middle-income countries is particularly welcome. Furthermore, you will be capable of managing, supervising and motivating research teams and students. You will possess excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with a range of teams and disciplines. You will be self-motivated, pro-active and willing to travel to low- and middle-income countries.

Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications
