Role Description

The York Trials Unit (YTU) is one of the UK’s leading centres for the design, conduct and analysis of randomised controlled trials. The York ‘spoke’ of the NIHR Research Design Service-Yorkshire & Humber (RDS-YH) is also embedded within YTU.

We are seeking a highly motivated Research Fellow (Grade 7) or Senior Research Fellow (Grade 8) to join our team to undertake research within the unit and to oversee the day-to-day operational management of RDS, including providing comprehensive advice to those seeking input from RDS. As a Senior Research Fellow you will also provide research leadership and as a member of the Trials Unit Senior Management Team you will play a lead role in the ongoing development of the Unit and its staff.

You will work closely with the lead for RDS-YH at York, Dr Catriona McDaid, to support the ongoing delivery and development of the RDS. You will also collaborate on grant applications to secure funding for RCTs; plan and manage trials and other research projects; and lead on the production of research outputs. You will also develop ideas for generating income including contributing to the process of securing external funding. The post offers the opportunity to be part of a large and successful multi-disciplinary Department, renowned for its methodological expertise and commitment to policy relevant research.

Key requirements for the Grade 7 role include: (see candidate brief for more details)

•           PhD in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience

•           Experience of conducting independent and collaborative research

•           Knowledge and experience in trial design and conduct and other relevant methods

•           Knowledge of the agenda around funding and undertaking research in the NHS

•           Proven ability to attract and obtain external research funding

•           Experience of writing up research work for peer-reviewed publications and other forms of dissemination

•           Strong collaborative ethos

Candidates applying for Senior Research Fellow must additionally be able to demonstrate a well-established reputation and academic leadership in research, have a developing track record of high quality publications and attracting relevant funding from multiple sources.

This is an open contract available at either Research Fellow or Senior Research Fellow level. Please indicate on your application the level of post for which you wish to be considered. Salary will be in the range of £38,832 - £47,722 per year for a Research Fellow, or £49,149 - £56,950 per year for a Senior Research Fellow.
