This is a unique opportunity to be involved in all aspects of recruitment for, and development and delivery of, a suite of Professional Practice masters programmes and a proposed JD at York Law School. The programmes are being developed to offer UK and international students the opportunity to enhance employability in professional legal practice. For UK students, this is in the context of forthcoming changes to the route to professional qualification as a solicitor. For international students, the programmes will offer opportunities to gain an internationally recognised English law qualification.
The successful candidate will take a leading role in the recruitment of both UK and international students on to the programmes. Given the nature of the market for professional practice programmes and LLMs, this will also involve developing working relationships with UK and international legal services employers, and marketing the benefits of both the programmes and their graduates. Student recruitment will involve working with central University recruitment colleagues to develop specific strategies for recruitment from North America and Australasia.
The role will also require input into the development of the programmes, designing simulations of realistic legal transactions and matters, integrating legal documentation, and identifying opportunities for practitioner masterclasses. There are also opportunities for developing collaborative aspects of the programmes with international law schools, and role envisages the candidate playing a key role in developing links with potential partners. The programmes are innovative in terms of their pedagogy, and the role will involve generation of ideas to ensure ongoing innovation and quality improvement.
The successful candidate will also be expected to act as a programme facilitator, acting as a supervisor to one or more student law firms, and as a mentor to individual students. This will be as part of a core team of professional practice facilitators.
We are seeking a highly motivated individual with high-level skills in recruitment, business development, curriculum design and facilitation to make a substantial contribution to these developments. You will have proven extensive experience in vocational and professional legal education programmes, and a track record of delivering change. You will have the ability both to deliver individually, and collaboratively with colleagues. Extensive experience of teaching in HE and experience of legal practice is essential.
The role is based at the University of York, at its Heslington East Campus.
The University is committed to promoting a diverse and inclusive community – a place where we can all be ourselves and succeed on merit.
