Are you looking for an exciting new opportunity, where you’ll be able to develop your skills whilst contributing to one of the top Universities in the UK?
We’re looking for an exceptional Linux infrastructure engineer to join our Systems Group at the University of York. As a self-motivated person who enjoys continuously learning new skills, you’ll be part of the team that provides infrastructure support, working on large scale systems administration and automation for both on-premises and cloud based infrastructure.
You’ll be working closely with all parts of IT Services to develop and enhance our services, managing and developing relevant systems and infrastructure and identifying when there is scope for new and enhanced systems/ technologies.
We’re a highly skilled team, tech led and introducing new methodologies across all our areas. We use test driven agile development with CI, automate our system administration using Puppet and Powershell DSC and are moving into AWS but everything we do is driven not by technology but by our drive to support teaching and research.
With over 1,200 virtual machines running on VMWare, 200 physical hosts and ~2.5Pb of storage on NetApp and Dell Compellent we use extensive automation. We manage our Linux machines using Puppet with fully automated VM builds and you’ll use your deep knowledge of Linux administration to drive this area. Like everywhere we have legacy systems, that you will be instrumental in helping replace but we’re also moving into AWS with cutting edge tools such as Glacier, Lambda and serverless applications.
You’ll have in-depth knowledge of Linux, including security issues and software management, along with knowledge of IP networking.
We’re looking for an effective communicator, who is able to think creatively and develop innovative technical solutions to unusual problems. You’ll be able to programme using Perl/Python/Ruby/Go or similar, having a working knowledge of cloud technologies would be beneficial too.
The University campus, situated close to York City Centre has a wide range of amenities, including shops, bars, cafes, restaurants, and a state of the art sports village.
