Role Description

The Environment Department is currently engaged in a major expansion in human geography and environmental social science to complement our existing strengths in physical geography, environmental science, ecology and environmental economics. This new position will provide leadership in this field.

The role
The Department has grown rapidly over the last decade and plans a further period of expansion through to 2020; human geography/environmental social science will be a focus for much of this growth. Your role will set the research agenda for human geography/environmental social science, shaping the research vision for the field and expanding the collaborative links we have with other Departments and Centres within York and promoting interdisciplinary research.

Key requirements - (viewed relative to the level of post applied for – see candidate brief for details)

  • PhD or equivalent in relevant field
  • Outstanding and internationally recognised knowledge in one or more fields of human geography/environmental social science complementary to existing strengths and plans of the Department
  • Demonstrable experience in leading, managing and attracting funds for internationally excellent research
  • Proven leadership and managerial skills with a demonstrable capacity for strategic thinking and planning
  • Substantial publication record in leading peer-reviewed journals
  • Significant and sustained success in accessing research grants and other external funding
  • Willingness to work with other disciplines and a commitment to a fully interdisciplinary approach to environmental issues

Salary will be commensurate with experience on the professorial scale, current minimum £62,585 per annum. Reader £49,149 - £60,410 a year.
