The Department of English and Related Literature at the University of York is seeking to appoint a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in twentieth-century literature and culture. Applications are welcome from any field of twentieth-century literature and culture, and the Department may look favourably on candidates with expertise in modernism or global literature.

You will have a PhD in English or related area, and will either have achieved appropriate academic professional and teaching qualifications or be willing to complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice at the University of York. You will have extensive knowledge of a research field and of a range of teaching techniques and methodologies.

You will have a record of outstanding research and will contribute to the world-leading research of the Department, to its highly-distinctive and broad-ranging Modern School, and to the interdisciplinary Centre for Modern Studies. You will publish high-quality research, seek external funding for individual and collaborative research projects, and be committed to conveying the results, and extending the impact, of your research beyond the academy. You will be willing to supervise PhD students.

You will be an outstanding teacher, able to convey course content effectively through lectures, workshops, seminars and other forms of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. You will contribute to research and teaching strengths in Anglophone writing, culture or media, although expertise in work in other languages may be an advantage. You will set and mark coursework and examinations, providing constructive feedback to students, and will develop and promote innovative teaching and learning approaches and material. You will have an interest in course design, and will be committed to ensuring and improving the quality of the design of existing teaching content.

You will be willing to undertake departmental administrative posts as appropriate to the role, at the request of the Head of Department.

At Senior Lecturer level, you will be expected to have a research record of international standing, and an established track record of innovation in teaching and learning, MA and PhD supervision, and administration and management.
