Role Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and talented postdoc to join Prof Mark Leake’s laboratory in the Departments of Physics and Biology, University of York. Our laboratory is interested in developing and applying novel methods of single-molecule biophysics to address basic biological questions (see, with one of our key questions concerning how proteins interact with DNA. We have used these cutting-edge tools to follow functional enzyme kinetics in living cells one molecule at a time, resolving fundamental questions concerning DNA replication (see DOI:10.1126/science.1227126) and remodelling molecular machines (see DOI:10.1126/science.1185757). Your role is one of two  postdoctoral research associate positions funded by BBSRC for the project ‘Replication repair in real life: analysing how broken DNA replication machines are rebuilt inside cells’ in collaboration with Prof Peter McGlynn (see and DOI:10.1101/cshperspect.a016550). There may also be additional opportunities to engage in a range of complementary projects active in Prof Leake’s group in what is a fantastic research playground for a modern biophysics postdoc to explore and grow.

You will conduct research under the supervision of senior colleagues and contribute to the production of research and assist in the identification and development of potential areas of research and the development of proposals for independent or collaborative research projects. You will develop and initiate collaborative working internally and externally, providing guidance to other staff and students. You will write up research results and dissemination through publications, seminar and conference presentations and public engagement and outreach activities.

You will already possess a relevant PhD, or be close to obtaining one, with a significant physical science component including several elements of biophysics/biological physics, or related subjects. You will have knowledge of optical physics and experience in biophysics. You will possess skills in construction/modification of biophysical apparatus, and ideally have experience of light microscopy, single-molecule biophysics and scientific computation.  You will need to be able to work independently as well as part of the programme team working on related projects. Excellent communication skills are essential and you should be keen to develop project/team leadership skills, and to establish bridges between the physical and life sciences.

This post is full time, for up until 31 March 2019 (with the possibility of extension). This is a grade 6 post, with salary in the range of £31,604-£38,832 per year per year.
