Applications are invited for a postdoctoral Research Associate position in the Department of Electronics within the Faculty of Sciences at the University of York. You will report to Dr Steven Johnson and Prof. James Moir (Department of Biology) and aims to develop appropriate solutions for testing water quality in marginalised communities. You will be responsible for 1) designing, testing and optimising a range of microbiological and molecular assays for the rapid and selective detection of bacteria associated with faecal contamination, 2) coordinating microbiological and chemical assessment of community water supplies, and 3) integration of the assay into a robust sensor technology. This research will be performed in close collaboration with other academics, NGOs and representatives from communities most affected by the challenges of accessing clean water, and the post-holder will be required to work collaboratively, productively and sensitively with each of these groups.
You should hold a PhD in physical sciences, molecular biology, microbiology, analytical chemistry or equivalent experience and be skilled in immunological assay development, biosensor design, surface chemistry for molecular immobilisation, mass spectrometry and best practice in water sampling and monitoring. Experience of innovative electrochemical and/or photonic biosensor would be an advantage.
This post is full time (37 hours a week) and fixed term until 30 April 2020.
