The University of York seeks two highly self-motivated and well qualified individuals with strong research expertise, a track record of commercialising intellectual property and substantial management experience in a research environment. We are seeking individuals with a background in biosciences, physical sciences or ICT. Experience in either or both of industry and/or academic technology transfer is highly desirable. You will identify, investigate and develop new commercial opportunities from the University’s research, carry out technology licencing activities and promote a growing entrepreneurial culture in the University. You will advise and support academic staff to source external funds for activities driving knowledge exchange between the university and external partners, and you will support growth of York’s contract and collaborative research portfolio.
You will have complete credibility with business and knowledge transfer intermediaries as well as with academics at all levels. You will be expected to have an excellent understanding of the motivation of academic researchers, as well as an understanding of the process of innovation and the nature and importance of entrepreneurial activity.
To succeed in this role, you will be able to assimilate a very wide brief and to rapidly gain an understanding of a broad spectrum of academic knowledge and identify the relevant knowledge exchange opportunities. You will be able to effectively communicate the key elements of the research and its benefits to potential markets. Experience of negotiating complex contracts and licence agreements with industrial partners is essential as is an understanding of intellectual property management.
The post will be based in the Research Innovation Office, the Innovation Centre, York Science Park, and will involve substantial time spent in relevant University departments and with external organisations. National and occasionally international travel to visit partners and clients will form a part of the role. The role will report to the Director, Research and Enterprise.
