You will provide technical support to post-doctoral research staff and principal investigators carrying out research investigating disease resistance in lettuce for the necrotrophic fungal pathogens Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and Botrytis cinerea, identifying beneficial alleles and markers and evaluating the potential of systems biology to enhance breeding of disease resistance in horticultural crops.
You will assist the postdoctoral fellow in plant pathogen infection studies, quantitative genetic analysis of disease resistance, gene expression profiling, genotyping and transformation of lettuce. Growth and infection of Brassica and tomato will play a minor role in the project. You will have excellent skills in plant growth, pathogen culture and infection assays. Ideally you will also have experience in molecular biology, particularly nucleic acid extraction and analysis. The position requires working as part of a team and being able to present scientific work clearly and precisely.
The project has been running since May 2015 and has recently moved to the University of York. Transcriptome profiling and network analysis, combined with quantitative genetic studies (mapping populations and diversity sets), will identify novel alleles and associated markers for increasing the resistance of lettuce to both B. cinerea and S. sclerotiorum.
