Role Description

The Department of Archaeology at York is looking for a skilled and highly motivated Early Stage Researcher (PhD candidate), with experience in bioarchaeology, microbiology, microscopy or genetics.

Working on the European Commission-funded “ArchSci2020: Archaeology on the Edge, Northern Europe and the Circumpolar World” you will undertake doctoral research focussing on “Uncovering the potential of dental calculus in exploring ancient diet and subsistence”. You will apply metagenomic, metaproteomic and microscopic analyses to examine dietary debris trapped in dental calculus, and reconstruct oral microbiomes through major dietary transitions. You will compare new biomolecular indicators to bulk isotopic and archaeological evidence for diet. You will be supervised at York by Dr Camilla Speller.

This is a 36-month fully funded PhD opportunity enabling you to study for a double doctorate at the universities of York and Copenhagen. As part of the role you will be expected to spend a minimum of 12 months at the University of Copenhagen.

In order to comply with European Commission regulations, to be eligible to apply for this role you must, at 1 October 2016, be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of your research career and have not been awarded a doctoral degree.

Mobility Rule: on 1 October 2016 you must not have resided or carried out your main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the UK for more than 12 months in the preceding 3 years. Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into account.

Salary will be within the range of £26,000 - £29,000 a year.
