The Department of Language and Linguistic Science is seeking to appoint a part-time Research Trainee, working on a part-time basis (6 hours per week, equivalent to approximately 0.16FTE). This role would suit someone who is looking to supplement existing part-time work or study.
The successful applicant will join an established project team involving the University of York, University of Sydney and Macquarie University. This project, “As we speak: Unmasking speech changes earlier in the course of disease”, is the first articulatory study of older adults with Apraxia of Speech (AoS), making use of real-time magnetic resonance imaging (rtMRI) to study how patterns of speech change over time in this population. We are looking for a highly motivated Research Trainee with experience in articulatory data analysis and excellent organisational skills who is interested in pursuing a career in speech research.
The Research Technician will be based in the Forensic Speech Science research group in the Department of Language and Linguistic Science, and will take part in regular online meetings with the rest of the project team in Sydney, Australia.
The post holder’s main responsibility will be the processing of real-time and volumetric MRI data of the vocal tract, acquired by the team in Sydney. Under the supervision of Dr Amelia Gully, they will develop methods for landmarking and segmenting MRI data for further analysis. They will also be expected to analyse associated speech recordings and perform basic analyses e.g. extracting format measurements. They will work with collaborators in Sydney to create and adhere to team data management and documentation principles. They will have the opportunity to contribute to academic and non-academic outputs that result from their work.
Experience of processing and/or analysing medical imaging data, preferably MRI
Experience of performing speech analyses e.g. formant measurements
Experience of working on own and as part of a team
Good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively
