Role Description


The Research, Innovation and Knowledge Exchange Directorate supports academic staff and departments to undertake world-leading research and to disseminate the knowledge created to external stakeholders for the benefit of society.

You will be an integral part of large team that manages circa 1200 research grants and have your own portfolio that you will support for the life cycle of the project. Ensuring robust compliance regarding legislation and policy along with accurate numeracy.

We have a vacancy in our Research Grants Operations team for a Research Grants Officer. This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a team and contribute to the success of the University of York. The role will enable you to develop a sound understanding of research administration, including financial monitoring.  You will contribute towards service improvements and excellent customer service. You will have good analytical and numerical skills, be methodical, organised and have a high standard of accuracy.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications needed

  • Good level computing skills, ability to utilise standard software packages and adapt to bespoke systems, particularly those with financial bias
  • Excellent communication and numerical skills, showing confidence and attention to detail
  • Able to work both independently and as part of a large team, prioritising work and responding flexibly to achieve deadlines
  • Able to demonstrate project support skills to a portfolio of research projects
  • Ability to identify practical solutions to multi-faceted issues and able to explain these in non-technical terms to colleagues
  • Experience of working in a large complex organisation
  • Proactive and keen to initiate improvement plans
  • Excellent attitude towards delivering high level customer service
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent professional experience
  • Good maths GCSE
  • Knowledge of academic research processes and issues
  • Knowledge of the requirements of sponsors of research activity in the HE sector or similar environment

We are open to part-time/job share applications within the advertised salary range
