Department

We are looking for a talented and motivated full-time Postdoctoral Research Associates to join the group of Professor Ian Hitchcock based in the Department of Biology at the University of York. The Hitchcock lab focuses on understanding the mechanisms of cytokine signalling in haematological malignancies with particular interest in translating fundamental biology to address therapeutic needs.

The post is full time, on a fixed term basis for 3 years and is funded by Blood Cancer UK.

Role

We have recently taken a multi-disciplinary approach to characterise the mechanisms of cytokine receptor activation in myeloproliferative neoplasms (Wilmes et al., Science 2020; Sangkhae et al., Blood, 2014) and modify cytokine signalling to direct haematopoietic cell fate outcomes (Cui et al., PNAS, 2021). In this exciting new project, funded by Blood Cancer UK, we now want to determine how cytokine receptor membrane density affects oncogenic JAK2V617F signalling and transformation in haematopoietic stem and progenitor cells.

The successful candidate will benefit from highly productive interactions with academic and clinical collaborators in the UK and Europe including Professor David Kent (York, UK; HSC biology), Dr Beth Psaila (Oxford, UK; haematological malignancies) and Professor Jacob Piehler (Osnabrück, Germany; super resolution microscopy). The post holder will be expected to drive their independent project, but also work closely with each other and with other lab members and assist in the identification and development of potential new areas of research. 

Opportunities for mentorship and additional collaborations will be available and encouraged.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

The successful candidate will have, or be in the process of finishing, a PhD in a biomedical sciences discipline or equivalent with experience in haematology, immunology or cancer cell biology, with specific expertise in cell and molecular biology, primary cell isolation and culture, flow cytometry and microscopy. Additional expertise in using in vivo mouse models would be advantageous. They will also have a knowledge of a range of research techniques and methodologies. The successful candidate must have experience of carrying out both independent and collaborative research, writing up research work for publication and a willingness to contribute to the process of securing future research funding.
