The Department of Psychology is recognised as one of the leading and most accomplished departments at York, with a global reputation for excellence in both teaching and research. We are committed to fostering a supportive environment where staff and students can thrive, contribute their best, and achieve their full potential. We take great pride in holding the Athena Swan Gold Award.
The role is based in the Department of Psychology and at the York NeuroImaging Centre.
We are looking for a highly motivated Research Associate to join Professor Beth Jefferies’s research group, to work on a project funded by the European Research Council called STROKEGRAD. This project is using gradient decomposition of functional connectivity patterns to predict long-term language impairments and recovery in people with aphasia following stroke. We are working with previously-collected large datasets of stroke survivors that contain structural and resting-state fMRI plus neuropsychological test scores examining language and cognition. The post holder will be responsible for data processing/analysis, interpretation and dissemination of findings, including by writing talks and giving conference presentations. There may be a requirement to give talks to stroke groups and to interact with speech therapists. The post holder will also work as part of a team with other members of the FLEXSEM lab to support wider activities of the research group.
A knowledge of resting-state fMRI analysis and an ability to use complex novel analysis approaches is essential.
Experience of gradient decomposition approaches is essential given the short timeframe of this appointment.
A PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience is desirable.
An interest in language and/or semantics, aphasia and large-scale brain organisation is also desirable.
Interview date: 6th January 2026
