We are seeking a full-time postdoctoral Research Associate to work on an ESRC funded project called: Nothing About Us Without Us: Co-producing inclusive data collections infrastructure with learning disabled people. The successful candidate will have excellent knowledge and experience of ethnographic research along with a clear commitment to amplifying the voices of learning disabled young people in research, including those who are non-verbal or minimally verbal. The role is based in the Department of Education at the University of York.
The successful candidate will join a team led by Professor Kathryn Asbury and Dr Laura Fox and will be a member of the GOALS Lab. They will be involved in designing an ethnographic study of young people’s communication preferences in a special school sixth form and a residential college. They will also play a central role in data collection, data analysis and writing up findings.
The aim of the project is to understand the many ways in which learning disabled young people choose to communicate, and to use that understanding to develop and build a library of evidence-informed data collection tools that are well suited to research with learning disabled communities. This library, and a set of inclusion principles, will be co-produced with learning disabled young people as well as key stakeholders such as parents, teachers and allied health professionals e.g. speech and language therapists. A good understanding of, and commitment to, principles and practices of both co-production and open research will be essential.
