The Circa Renewable Chemistry Institute (CRCI) has been established at the University of York’s Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence (GCCE), with funding from Circa PLC. The Institute aims to become an internationally recognised hub for activities related to renewable chemistry and, in particular, the chemistry of levoglucosenone and its derivative, CyreneTM (a new commercial bio-based solvent).
The Department of Chemistry, an internationally acclaimed department, couples cutting-edge research with a commitment to teaching, student satisfaction, and family-friendly policies.
We seek a dedicated individual to conduct research on CyreneTM, Levoglucosenone and their derivatives; investigate the replacement of toxic solvents with CyreneTM in various significant industrial processes; and support the operations and development of the CRCI. The role involves close collaboration with Circa PLC and other partnering companies, regular reporting of results, and identifying and developing potential research areas. Your role will also involve leading on research projects identified by the CRCI Board, interpreting results using analytical techniques, engaging in regular discussions with Circa staff, and maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of relevant fields.
The ideal candidate will have a degree and PhD in chemistry or equivalent experience, with a deep understanding of green chemistry, practical lab experiments, and renewable chemistry. Essential skills include highly developed communication skills, the ability to work independently, and excellent IT and analytical skills. Experience in green chemistry, managing and motivating others, writing reports, and working with greener synthetic methods is crucial. A flexible attitude, commitment to quality, and excellent interpersonal skills are also necessary. Experience in industry collaborations and renewable chemistry will be highly regarded.
