Applications are invited for a Research Associate position in the department of Mathematics at the University of York to work under the supervision of Dr. Bowman-Scargill on the EPSRC “Tensor and wreath products of symmetric groups” grant.
The aim of the project is to understand decompositions of representations of symmetric groups and related algebras. In particular, we wish to understand the Kronecker coefficients (which describe the decomposition of a tensor product of two Specht modules) and the modular decomposition numbers (which describe the composition factors of the Specht modules in positive characteristic) of symmetric groups.
Candidates will have completed, or be close to completing, a PhD in a relevant area of Mathematics. An ideal candidate will have a background in diagrammatic algebra, or categorical Lie theory, or in the combinatorics of Kronecker coefficients/modular decomposition numbers. The applicant should also show great potential at mastering new areas and techniques.
Interview date: To be confirmed
