Role Description

Department

The Department of Philosophy was ranked 2nd in the UK for its research in REF2021, with 100% of our research impact and 45.5% of our publications ranked at 4* (the highest grade). We pride ourselves on a working culture which supports Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, and in 2020 achieved the Bronze Athena Swan Award. We are seeking to appoint an outstanding individual to build on these successes.

We have a healthy postgraduate community of ~30 PhD students and 30 MA students, and more than 500 undergraduates across multiple programmes, including PPE, Philosophy and English, History, Linguistics, Modern Languages, Sociology, Maths and Physics. There are 25 permanent academic staff and 6 postdoctoral researchers.

We currently host research projects on Learning from Fiction (Leverhulme funded), Grief (AHRC funded), and Comparative Analytic Theology (Templeton funded), and have three co-investigators on Autonomous Systems projects funded by the EPSRC.

Role (Lecturer)

  • To develop research objectives, projects and proposals and carry out individual or collaborative research projects
  • To lead on and/or contribute to the production of research outputs and research outcomes.
  • To design, develop and deliver teaching across a wide range of modules including Philosophy of AI, machine-learning and data science
  • To undertake effectively a range of administrative and managerial responsibilities 

  Skills, Experience & Qualification needed (Lecturer)

  • PhD in Philosophy or equivalent experience
  • Appropriate academic professional and teaching qualifications or a willingness to complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice

Role (Senior Lecturer)

  • To generate new research approaches and identify, adapt, develop and use research methodologies and techniques appropriate to the type of research and development undertaken
  • To lead on and/or contribute to the production of research outputs and research outcomes
  • To publish high impact research in quality journals, either as a sole author or in collaboration with others, and to devise, direct and develop research projects generating external research funding.
  • To take responsibility for overseeing, developing and promoting innovative teaching and learning approaches and material, which create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst students
  • To lead the design, development and delivery of a range of academic modules including Philosophy of AI, machine-learning and data science,  and ensure that design and delivery comply with the quality standards and regulations of the Department and University
  • To undertake effectively a range of administrative and managerial responsibilities

  • PhD in Philosophy or equivalent research experience
  • Appropriate academic professional and teaching qualifications or a willingness to complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice
  • Outstanding qualities and achievements in scholarship and research at a national and international level
