The Social Policy subject group in the School for Business and Society at the University of York wishes to recruit an outstanding candidate to a Lectureship in Social Policy and Public Management. You will bring academic and/or practice expertise around public management, particularly in applied areas of social policy, that will complement existing strengths at York. You will also have subject knowledge in one of the following areas: policy evaluation, public finance, public services, public administration, governance, institutional design and leadership. We would welcome applicants with subject knowledge of social divisions and differences in respect to social policy and public service delivery.
Our work has a global reputation, consistently ranking in the World Top 30 or above for Social Policy and Administration (QS World Rankings, 2023). We have expertise in a wide range of policy areas and in issues spanning policy design, management and delivery, as well as policy impacts and outcomes. We have a particular concern with the ways in which policies affect social inequalities and social divisions. Our ultimate goal is to make high-quality evidence-based contributions to policy and practice that directly contributes to social progress locally, nationally and internationally.
We are one of the largest groupings of social and public policy researchers in the UK, housing a large group of Social Policy staff, with over 30 core members of teaching staff and around 20 more staff holding research-only roles. Our work is applied in nature and we have a strongly interdisciplinary orientation. We work closely with colleagues from across the School for Business and Society, particularly colleagues specialising in Public Management and Social Work, and with colleagues in York’s Departments of Health Sciences, Law, Politics and Sociology.
You will be responsible for the design, development and management of innovative teaching materials and modules, with a primary focus on policy analysis, particularly as applied to social policy and public management. You will undertake academic supervision of students and act as a research supervisor within your own specialist subject area. You will set and mark student assessment tasks and provide constructive feedback to students. You will plan and deliver teaching, and actively contribute to the ongoing development and improvement of taught programmes, including both on-campus programmes and online distance learning programmes. You will develop and promote research activities and manage and guide the work of staff and research students in your own specialist area. You will be comfortable taking lead responsibility for research tasks as well as working with research partners. As well as publishing in peer-reviewed journals, you will have experience in disseminating research findings to different stakeholder groups at a national and/or international level. You will contribute to the administration and management of the subject group and the wider school.
With a PhD in Social Policy and/or Public Management or an associated subject or equivalent experience, and an appropriate academic professional and teaching qualification (or willingness to complete one), you will have experience of taking responsibility for teaching and learning at undergraduate and postgraduate level. You will be a team player who works collaboratively, flexibly and reliably, and will work alongside an experienced and supportive team of colleagues. You will have a commitment to the department/university outside of your chosen field and a willingness to update your knowledge and skills.
Interview date: Friday 27th October 2023
