We take great pride in holding the Athena Swan Gold Award.
The Department of Biology at the University of York is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic full time (37 hours a week) semester time only (34 weeks per year) laboratory technician to work in the Biology Teaching Laboratories.
You will join a team of eight technicians responsible for providing technical and scientific support to all practical activities held within the purpose built Biology Teaching Laboratories. Practical activities cover the whole spectrum of biology and are delivered to a wide range of individuals including undergraduates, postgraduates and other visitors.
The laboratories are located across two buildings and two floors including designated student project laboratories, cell culture facilities and fluorescent microscopy suite. The successful candidate will support the work across all laboratory areas.
Working under the supervision and guidance of the teaching laboratory managers you will provide daily technical support including maintenance of stocks, processing laboratory waste, glasswashing, routine laboratory checks and assisting technical staff in their duties. You will also take responsibility for the organisation and housekeeping of the autoclaving and glass washing areas, reporting problems and ensuring all equipment is functioning correctly.
This is an essential and active role which underpins all of the activities taking place within the teaching laboratories.
Some flexibility is required as practical sessions are timetabled between 9am and 6pm but this information will be known in advance. Please also note University semester time is not the same as school term time.
Annual leave is not taken, instead proportional payment for annual leave is included in annualised pay.
Although the post is based in the Biology Teaching Laboratories the role is not predominantly teaching students.
