The School of Physics, Engineering and Technology brings physicists and engineers together to push the frontiers of knowledge, foster innovation and meet the grand challenges facing society. Our aim is to deliver world-leading research in both fundamental and applied areas whilst developing new technologies that work for the public good, in an environment where everyone can thrive.
As a School, equality, diversity, and inclusion are central to our culture, and we strive to provide a working environment allowing all staff and students to contribute fully, to flourish, and to excel. We aim to ensure that there is a supportive and egalitarian culture at all levels and across all staff groups and offer a range of family-friendly, inclusive employment policies, flexible working arrangements, staff engagement forums, campus facilities, and services to support staff from different backgrounds. We are proud to hold Juno Champion and Athena Swan silver awards, recognising our commitment to creating an equitable and fully inclusive environment in which staff and students can thrive. We aim to inspire young people to engage with science and engineering through our outreach work.
The University of York has an established international reputation for its training programmes in fusion energy. For postgraduates, we run the MSc in Fusion Energy and lead the two EPSRC Centres for Doctoral Training in Fusion. For professionals from the fusion and adjacent sectors, we run the Fusion Industry School. Now in its fourth year, the School enables industry partners to enhance the skills of their engineers and other professionals who don’t have a fusion background. Collaboration with the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) and the University of Oxford, we deliver two 4-day programmes annually. These feature lectures, discussions, and networking opportunities, including talks and panel sessions with a wide range of experts from industry, academia, policy-making, and regulators. Because the Fusion Industry School recently received funding from the UKAEA’s FOSTER Programme (Fusion Opportunities in Skills, Training, Education and Research) to support the growth of current activities and develop additional training streams based on market requirements.
