The Archaeology Data Service (ADS) is a world-leading digital repository which provides digital data archiving services for UK archaeology and heritage. We are based in the King’s Manor in the University of York but we work closely with external partners, both in Higher Education and in the public and commercial archaeological sectors. We are an established component of UKRI’s digital research infrastructure and we are also active in international collaborations, as a leading member of the ARIADNE European Research Infrastructure. As a result of a successful £14.4m bid to AHRC under the RICHeS programme we are now leading a consortium to develop and host a Heritage Science Data Service (HSDS).
Reporting to the Archives Manager, the Digital Archives Supervisor will be expected to assist in overseeing the implementation of ADS policies and procedures, ensure that all data are managed according to best archival and curatorial practice, and take the lead in developing policy and procedure for data from the Heritage Science and Conservation Research (HSCR) domains. As the senior Archivist within the Archives Team they will also work on digital archives themselves, including high-profile and/or complex archive projects, and will support the Collections Development Manager in ensuring the team operates efficiently and meets all project deadlines.
You should have experience of working in a digital preservation environment, and with a wide variety of data types and formats, as well as knowledge of approaches to digital preservation and information management, including data standards, digital preservation (OAIS), metadata standards and schemas, and the FAIR principles, as well as of the key players in the sector. Experience in mentoring or supervising members of a small team is also essential. You should be able to write reports and/or documentation, and an advanced level of relevant digital skills e.g. as an advanced user of GIS or digital imaging, is also essential. You should be able to reconcile conflicting priorities and to respond positively to complete tasks to deadlines and specified standards in a busy service environment. You must be able to work collaboratively with others, deliver a quality service, and identify and implement continuous improvement. Knowledge of the organisation of, and key stakeholders in the archaeology, conservation, or heritage science sectors in the UK is desirable.
