The Department of Biology is at the forefront of pioneering global research and technological advancement in our world-leading research centres. As a signatory of the Science Council’s Technician Commitment, the University of York strongly supports technical career development. Part of this programme is the drive to recruit new talent into the technical profession in higher education. The University is offering an apprenticeship programme that will provide a unique opportunity to join the University of York and undertake a nationally recognised qualification whilst working in a challenging and exciting sector.
This is an exciting opportunity to work in the Department of Biology at the University of York, which deliver first-class teaching and research, from cancer research to bio-renewable energy from plants.
The apprenticeship scheme provides a perfect way to earn a wage while gaining vital work experience within a work environment and studying for Laboratory Technician Level 3. The course will be a day-release where you will be given one day per week to carry out your studies. It is an ideal starting point for those who wish to start a career as a technician, either in support or research.
You will learn, assist, and work as part of the biology technical support teams, primarily the Biology Infrastructure Team, providing an autoclaving and glass wash service, monitoring and maintaining a breadth of different technical equipment, learning how research and teaching laboratories operate, health and safety, and become proficient in relevant IT software.
The post is part of a larger team of technical staff supporting the Department.
