The Archaeology Data Service (ADS) is a world-leading digital repository which provides digital data archiving services for UK archaeology and heritage. We are based in the King’s Manor in the University of York but we work closely with external partners, both in Higher Education and in the public and commercial archaeological sectors. We are an established component of UKRI’s digital research infrastructure and we are also active in international collaborations, as a leading member of the ARIADNE European Research Infrastructure. As a result of a successful £14.4m bid to AHRC under the RICHeS programme we are now leading a consortium to develop and host a Heritage Science Data Service (HSDS).
Under the overall supervision of the ADS Lead Applications Developer, the Applications Developer will join a team of developers who are working on new projects and supporting existing services. They will provide technical expertise and leadership to the development of strategic IT services and systems typically through leading or being a member of project teams and working parties. They will act as technical lead for specific projects and liaise with external partners to ensure the project(s) is completed to quality & timescales, and contribute to a culture of continual personal and service development to foster an open, collaborative and innovative working environment.
You will have a degree level qualification in an IT field, or equivalent employment experience of at least three years. You must have knowledge of current software development practices, software architectures, web application development, supporting high availability IT systems, the design and operation of IT systems in relation to GDPR, and of agile development methods and decision-making. You must be able to reconcile conflicting priorities and to respond positively to complete tasks to deadlines and specified standards in a busy service environment, and to communicate complex topics to a technical and non-technical audience. You must be able to lead complex software development projects in collaboration with others, and to develop team members through training, mentoring and coaching. You should have experience of involvement in IT projects covering the full project lifecycle, familiarity with Windows and Linux operating systems as well as software development and deployment tools, modern OO/dynamic programming languages such as JavaScript, Ruby, or Java, and of SQL and the design of relational databases, as well as application development using HTML, SASS and modern front-end frameworks, such as React and VueJS.
