Department

The Departments of Archaeology, History and History of Art at the University of York are globally renowned for teaching and research excellence and are home to internationally leading scholars in their disciplines.  We offer a diverse range of undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses, and pride ourselves on providing a supportive, enthusiastic, and challenging academic atmosphere which enables our students to achieve their full potential. 

Role

You will be instrumental in ensuring smooth operational delivery and providing essential administrative support, serving as a central contributor to the department. This diverse role includes managing departmental communications, supporting events, and creating and maintaining vital process documentation. You are expected to use your initiative daily to resolve customer queries, share knowledge with colleagues, and proactively identify and implement service improvements and efficiencies using digital solutions. The position also spans critical areas such as HR and finance admin, procurement support, and maintaining the departmental web presence. This is a fixed term contract up to 31 December 2027 working part-time at 29.60 hours a week.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

• A general education to include three passes at A level, or an equivalent educational qualification, or relevant experience
• Good oral and written communication skills, with the ability to provide detailed advice and guidance on specialist defined processes and procedures to internal and external contacts
• Initiative and problem solving skills
• Strong digital skills
• A high degree of attention to detail
• Able to work under pressure
• Demonstrable ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative
• Able to deal with confidential matters and act with discretion
