Department

At the University of York, there is a prominent strand of research which focuses on social security and poverty, and foregrounds everyday experiences of life on a low-income. This research is collaborative in approach; and creates wide ranging opportunities for impact through direct work with policymakers and the media. Key projects include Changing Realities, Safety Nets, and Family Finances; with projects working across institutions and with colleagues from outside academia (i.e. Child Poverty Action Group and Resolution Foundation). All of these projects are overseen by Professor Ruth Patrtick, who is based within the School for Business and Society, an interdisciplinary school. 

Role

We are seeking to appoint an experienced, enthusiastic and proactive administrator with excellent interpersonal and communications skills to support the projects that Ruth Patrick leads. This is an exciting opportunity to join a busy and pro-active team, and to be part of seeking to build real and lasting impact through research. 

To provide operational administrative support across a range of research projects, all of which have a broad focus on social security and poverty. Working under the line management of the Administration Manager, the role holder will provide a responsive, proactive and high-quality administrative service to support busy research projects. 

As part of the Changing Realities and Safety Net project teams,  you will work collaboratively with academic and external colleagues, as well as with wider stakeholders.  The role will suit someone who is highly motivated, able to learn quickly and work independently. 

This role is available on a part time basis (22.20 hours per week, 0.6 FTE) and with fixed term funding until 30 June 2026.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications needed

• Level 2 qualification including Maths and English. (Qualifications at this level include five GCSEs at grade A*-C/ grade 4-9. Please view the full list). We also welcome applicants with equivalent non-uk qualifications or equivalent professional experience.
• Experience of working in a varied administrative role effectively balancing competing priorities with the ability to demonstrate flexibility and adaptation to changing needs
• A professional and thorough approach to work, with an eye for detail and experience of providing excellent standard of customer service
• Ability to communicate effectively with a range of people including budget holders, the central Finance Team, external suppliers and colleagues with financial queries
• Accurately record, analyse, interpret and report information/data
• Use digital technologies including Google applications and/or Microsoft Office
• Organise activities and resources
