The mission of the York Environmental Sustainability Institute (YESI) is to facilitate and deliver world-class collaborative interdisciplinary research on environmental sustainability, co-designed with the researcher community, industry and policymakers. Our innovative approach is based on collaborations between the Arts and Humanities, Sciences and Social Sciences, addressing environmental challenges at local, regional and global scales.
The YESI Community is open to all UoY researchers and their research partners. YESI fosters innovative interactions across and beyond York’s three faculties, via networks, bid development support, workshops, and public engagement and outreach events. YESI works with other interdisciplinary initiatives within the university (e.g. ESAY, IMRY, ISA, YBRI, IGDC, LCAB etc) to deliver the strategic research aims of the University.
YESI’s Research Themes reflect the pressing environmental issues that humanity faces, as well as building from key academic strengths in environmental sustainability research at York. The current Research Themes and Theme co-leads are:
Resilient Ecosystems (soon to become Resilient Socio-ecological Systems) – Prof. Colin Beale & Dr Julia Touza
Environment and Health – Prof. Pete Coventry & Dr Katherine Brookfield.
Food, Water and Waste - Dr Liz Rylott & Prof. James Chong
We seek to appoint two Co-Leads for the Resilient Socio-ecological Systems theme, as the current role holders are reaching the end of their 3 year term. Successful applicants will join the YESI team to continue to shape the strategic direction of the Institute under the directorship of Prof. Lindsay Stringer.
You will be an internationally recognised researcher with expertise in the broad area of socio-ecological systems and/or resilience (commensurate with your career stage). You will be an inspiring, collaborative interdisciplinary leader who can harness these research strengths. Applications are welcome from all three Faculties, and from permanent UoY staff at all career stages from lecturer to professor, including permanent research fellows at Grade 7 or above.
Applicants should upload a CV and a statement (up to 2 pages) identifying how they fit the role description and person specification and outlining both a short-term (initial 6 months) and longer-term vision for the theme.
Please discuss your application with your line manager or HoD before submitting.
YESI Research Theme co-Leads are bought out from their departmental duties on a 0.2 FTE basis, with line management from the YESI Director for that portion of their professional duties. The term periods for these positions are 3 years, with a start date of 1 July 2024 at 0.1 FTE (x2) to allow a handover from the current postholders. This will increase to 0.2 FTE (x2) from 1 September 2024.
Application deadline: 30 April 2024
Interview date: 28 May 2024
For informal enquiries: please contact YESI Director Prof. Lindsay Stringer lindsay.stringer@york.ac.uk, or the current role holders: Prof. Colin Beale colin.beale@york.ac.uk or Dr Julia Touza julia.touza@york.ac.uk
